Artist Statements
This still life represents, really, a lot of my early years. In the photo you see a guitar and an amplifier. Throughout my early years I listened a lot to my dads music, as I didn’t really have a music taste at the time. Just about all of the music my dad listened to was rock and roll, blues. jazz, things of that nature. Also around that time my dad and I started up taking guitar lessons. This was a lot of fun and we actually got pretty good. I unfortunately had to quit because other things got in the way, but my dad still does it. So the guitar really means a lot to me and I was glad that I could find a way to incorporate it into my collage.

Stephan Hamilton
Chicago Food Photographer
Stephan Hamilton originally went to the Art Institute of Chicago thinking he wanted to be a fashion designer, but he soon realized that he hated sewing. Because he had always been fascinated by photography, he decided to take that up instead. He started off doing fashion photography, but he realized that he didn’t have the personality for fashion. He then found his niche in food photography, which he’s been doing for over 15 years now. He really enjoys it and plans on continuing on this path.
He creates bright and happy photos. At least for me a lot of his photos inspire me to go make one of the dishes he’s photographed. Or at least to go and eat something. As opposed to a lot of photographers nowadays, he doesn't manipulate his photos in photoshop a whole lot. He just tweaks things to make the color pop a little more.
Some big ideas behind this artist's work is he is always trying to think of new and creative ways to present his food. He is doing this thing called his “Restaurant Project” where he takes dishes from restaurants and tries to recreate them as best they can. He is always trying to improve and meet new chefs for his photography. I don’t think he has very many “major ideas” or anything in his photography, in reality he just takes cool pictures of food.
He has made me try to make my photos look as natural as possible. Throughout this trimester, I have tried to make my photos, look natural, but I still like to tweak them in photoshop, just like he does. I’ve never seen him go super hard in photoshop, adding things like an extra arm on things or anything, and I respect him for that. And, I actually agree with his kind of style. He really has influenced a lot of my photos this trimester.
Compare and Contrast-
French Fry Photos- His photo is a lot lower to the ground, and I tried my best to achieve this, but I could only get so low. He also seemed to manage to get a whole lot closer to the fries then I did. I tried to emulate that, but the Image got a little too blurry.
Mint Ice Cream Photos- His ice cream photo was a lot closer to the bowl then I was, I tried to get up close, but I really preferred the way it looked from farther away. His scoops were also a lot more round then mine were.
Ice Cream Scoop Photos- His scoops are a lot rounder then mine, and his scooper is brown while mine is blue. But other then that I think our photos are pretty similar.
Personal Artist Statement- I took these photos with the mindset that I would try to recreate the images perfectly and my images and his would almost be the exact same. But what I ended up doing is adding my own personal twist on them. I would take his idea, and then make it the way I wanted. I'm actually really happy with the way these photos came out, and I'm really glad I did them.
